When point-level sensing is required at multiple points in a liquid tank or container, there are two basic options. Multi-point level detection can be done through either of these options:

  1. With individual point-level sensors mounted at each level of the tank or vessel
  2. With a single, custom-engineered sensor incorporating sensors at each point

While each option might produce similar results, the former brings with it a few significant disadvantages.

First, multiple single-point liquid level sensors may have a higher impact on the budget that a single consolidated unit.

Second, using multiple single-point level sensors means more mounting points and through-holes. Compared with a single mounting point for an integrated multi-level sensor, this involves considerably more engineering workaround.

The Benefits of Multilevel Float Switches from SMD Fluid Controls

For these reasons and more, multi-point level detection is often best accomplished with custom multilevel float switches like those offered by SMD Fluid Controls.

Top or bottom-mounted with a single through-hole, a multilevel sensor from SMD can be customized to meet your exact specifications, including length, number of floats, float position, normally open/normally closed operation, wire type, mounting options, temperature sensor integration, and more.

Multilevel float switches from SMD come in a variety of materials to suit various industrial applications, from food and beverage processing to medical devices and potable water. Stainless steel, polypropylene, and nitrile rubber are just some of the materials available for floats and switches.

If continuous level sensing might be a better option for your application than multi-point level detection, SMD also offers a number of options such as ultrasonic and hydrostatic pressure level sensors
