Hurricane season is here on the East Coast, and from Florida to Maine itās past time to prepare for the worst of what the season can offer. When hurricanes strike, flooding caused by heavy rain and wind is usually one of the most destructive results. Even mild flooding can halt infrastructure and destroy property. Preparing for hurricane season is therefore largely a matter of preparing for flooding. And thatās one area where float switches and liquid level sensors can really come in handy!
Float Switches are Critical for Sump Pumps
Many homes on the East Coast have basements that are susceptible to floodingāthis can cause serious damage to a homeās foundation. Thatās why many houses are equipped with sump pumps.
Sump pumps work by sitting in a wide sump basin which harmlessly collects water. When water levels rise to the point of flooding, a sump pump float switch is triggered to activate a water pump. The floodwaters are pumped outside, and the homeās foundation is protected.
Sump pumps are essential for many homes in the best of circumstances but are especially critical during hurricanes or other summer storms.
Float Switches for Bilge Pumps
Hurricanes season is also risky for docked boats. According to a recent article by Jerry Gerardi in the Tallahassee Democrat, boats left in the water during hurricane season should āhave a well-functioning bilge pump with an automatic float switch.āA boatās bilge is the compartment beneath the waterline, which collects water that needs to be pumped out regularly. A float switch-triggered automatic bilge pump is a common tool for clearing ship bilges.
