Float switches can be found in everything from baking facilities to sump tanks. But did you know that they can also be found in aquariums? Float switches are used in all kinds of applications, including those that can be found in your home.
Aquarium Float Switches
Without a float switch, saltwater aquariums can experience several issues. Many saltwater aquariums feature DIY sump filters. However, these filters can encourage evaporation or cause a flood if the plumbing gets clogged. This, in turn, upsets the balance of salt in the tank or can overflow the tank.
With that said, float switches can help in aquariums. These float switches, at their base, check the water level. They then can switch a circuit on or off to prevent water levels from going to high or too low. This saves not only your fish but also your floor from overflow.
How Aquarium Float Switches Work
An aquarium float switch is essentially a floating switch that will open or close circuits based on the water level. These circuits can be attached to a water pump that can then be attached to purified freshwater. When enough evaporation occurs, the switch turns on and water is pumped into the tank. This water then automatically turns off once the water approaches the correct level.
Float switches can also prevent floods. If a gravity drain is blocked and a pump continues to feed water into a tank, then float switches can quickly shut off that aspect so your aquarium doesn’t overflow.
