There are few automated processes as critically effective to pharmaceutical manufacturers as Clean-in-Place (CIP). CIP allows manufacturers to clean their tanks without having to disassemble them. Naturally, this method drastically improves productivity and lead time.

How CIP Works

While the step-by-step process of CIP systems can vary depending on the needs of the user, the general concept is consistent, regardless of industry. All CIP configurations involve rinse, wash, and drain cycles. The duration of rinse and wash cycles can range from 5 minutes to an hour. In the most basic sense, CIP exhibits some similarities to household washing machines: to cleanse the tank, a powerful detergent is used, and when the washing cycle is done, the residue is drained thoroughly.

Minimizing Waste & Cross-Contamination with Liquid Level Sensors

As with all automated processes, CIP is only as effective as its individual parts. A flaw in one of the integral steps–like an excessive amount of a particular cleaning agent–could result in cross-contamination.  To keep CIP systems in peak sanitary condition, manufacturers can make smart use of liquid level sensors.

The most efficient CIP systems retain an optimal amount of heat throughout the entire process. To avoid an unnecessary loss of heat, manufacturers can use custom temperature sensors, like our FT20. Temperature sensors like the F20 gauges electrical resistance in relation to the surrounding fluids. Simply put, temperature sensors will be your weatherman in the tank: if temperatures stray from your ideal forecast, then the switch will ensure that you’re aware of it.
