Managing large channels of water inside a flume, weir, or tank can be challenging without a proper flow measurement plan. Unlike small reserves and containers, large water channels come with turbulence, which is the enemy of accuracy. So, what’s the best way to measure flow levels in turbulence-rich environments? Stilling Wells.

What Are Stilling Wells?

Stilling wells are cylinder-shaped chambers that are connected to, but isolated from, a channel’s main flow of water. Capturing a portion of water inside of a stilling well helps to quiet the interfering turbulence found in the main channel. Now you might be wondering: how can that portion of water provide additional benefit if the stilling well is isolated? Well, a small connector links the stilling well to the main channel, which allows it to rise and fall at the same rate (minus the turbulence).

How Stilling Wells & Float Switches Work Together

While Stilling Wells shield the water sample from turbulence, float switches, like the FM10 or FM20 , can be mounted under the stilling well’s manhole cover in order to accurately monitor flow levels. The water sample inside of the stilling well then becomes the point of reference for the entire channel.

Sanitary Applications & Stilling Wells Don’t Mix

Since solid waste will inevitably clog the connection to the main channel, stilling wells should not be used to measure flow levels in sanitary environments.
